The Gold Standard of Water Purification

Reverse osmosis is the most thorough water purification technology available for residential use. RO systems force water through a semi-permeable membrane with microscopic pores (0.0001 micron) that allow only water molecules to pass through while blocking virtually all contaminants.

The result is water so pure it's often compared to distilled water - but with better taste because beneficial minerals can be added back. RO removes 95-99% of dissolved solids, heavy metals, chemicals, and other contaminants that other filters can't touch.

Reverse osmosis system installation in Muskoka

What Reverse Osmosis Removes

Comprehensive removal of virtually all contaminants

Heavy Metals

Lead, arsenic, mercury, chromium, copper, and other metals (95-98% removal)

Dissolved Solids (TDS)

Reduces total dissolved solids by 95-99%. Includes minerals, salts, and metals

Fluoride

85-95% fluoride removal (one of few methods that removes fluoride effectively)

Nitrates & Nitrites

Agricultural contamination, fertilizer runoff (85-95% removal)

Sodium & Chloride

Removes salt (good if you have water softener and want drinking water without sodium)

Pharmaceuticals

Many pharmaceutical compounds that sometimes contaminate water sources

Radium & Uranium

Radioactive elements sometimes found in well water

Bacteria & Viruses

Most microorganisms are removed by membrane (though UV or pre-chlorination recommended for bacteria-laden water)

Chemicals & Pesticides

Herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, and many industrial chemicals

✨ Nearly Complete Purification

RO removes more contaminants more completely than any other residential filtration method. If you want the absolute best drinking water quality, reverse osmosis is the answer.

RO System Components

Understanding your system's filtration stages

1

Sediment Pre-Filter (5 micron)

Removes sediment, dirt, and particles. Protects RO membrane from damage.

2

Carbon Pre-Filter

Removes chlorine (which damages RO membranes), chemicals, and improves taste/odor.

3

RO Membrane ⭐ (The Heart)

The actual reverse osmosis filter. Semi-permeable membrane with microscopic pores removes dissolved solids and contaminants. This is where the magic happens.

Replacement: Every 2-3 years depending on water quality and usage

4

Storage Tank

Stores 2-4 gallons of purified water under pressure. Provides instant flow at faucet. RO filters slowly so storage tank is essential.

5

Post Carbon Filter (Polish Filter)

Final stage removes any remaining taste or odor from storage tank. Ensures best possible taste.

6

Optional: Remineralization Stage

Adds beneficial minerals back (calcium, magnesium) for taste and health. Makes water less "flat" tasting.

7

Dedicated Faucet

Separate faucet at kitchen sink dispenses RO water. Usually installed in unused hole in sink or beside main faucet.

Professional RO Installation

1

Site Assessment

Check under-sink space for RO system (14-16" height typically needed), verify cold water supply access, check drain availability, plan faucet installation location.

2

RO Faucet Installation

Drill hole in sink or countertop (if no existing hole available), install RO faucet with proper sealing. Most systems come with stylish faucets matching kitchen decor.

3

Cold Water Connection

Shut off cold water supply under sink, install tee fitting with shut-off valve for RO feed line. Connect 1/4" tubing from valve to RO system inlet.

4

Drain Connection

Install drain saddle valve on sink drain pipe for reject water disposal. RO systems produce wastewater (typically 3-4 gallons waste per 1 gallon purified). Connect drain line from RO to saddle.

5

RO System Assembly

Mount RO system in cabinet, install all filters in correct sequence, connect storage tank, connect all tubing (color-coded for easy identification), ensure proper routing without kinks.

6

System Startup & Flushing

Open water supply, check all connections for leaks, flush system for 2-4 hours to activate filters and fill storage tank, dump first 2 tanks of water (removes carbon fines).

7

Water Quality Testing & Training

Test TDS levels before and after to show improvement, demonstrate faucet operation, explain filter replacement schedule, provide maintenance guide.

Benefits of Reverse Osmosis Water

💧

Exceptional Purity

95-99% contaminant removal. Nearly as pure as distilled water but with better taste. The cleanest water you can get from a home system.

😋

Superior Taste

Removes everything that affects taste - chlorine, minerals, chemicals, organic compounds. Crystal clear water that tastes amazing.

Better Beverages

Coffee and tea taste noticeably better with RO water. Ice cubes are crystal clear. Drinking water is restaurant-quality.

🍝

Healthier Cooking

Cook pasta, rice, and soup with pure water. No off-tastes from contaminants. Baby formula made with safest possible water.

♻️

Stop Buying Bottled Water

RO water rivals or exceeds bottled water quality. Save money, reduce plastic waste, have unlimited supply. System pays for itself quickly.

🏠

Property Value

RO systems are attractive features for home buyers. Shows property is well-maintained and provides immediate value.

RO System Maintenance

Regular Maintenance Schedule:

Every 6-12 Months:

  • • Replace sediment pre-filter
  • • Replace carbon pre-filter
  • • Replace post-carbon filter
  • • Check for leaks
  • • Test water quality

Every 2-3 Years:

  • • Replace RO membrane (most critical!)
  • • Cost: $80-150 depending on system
  • • Signs it needs replacement: flow rate drops, TDS increases

Every 5-7 Years:

  • • Replace storage tank (if bladder fails)
  • • Deep system sanitization
  • • Replace any worn components

Important Considerations

⚠️ Water Waste (Reject Water)

RO systems produce wastewater. Typical ratio is 3-4 gallons wasted per 1 gallon purified. More efficient systems waste less but all RO produces some waste.

Why this happens: Concentrated minerals and contaminants must be flushed to drain to keep membrane clean. It's the tradeoff for exceptional purity.

Slow Production Rate

RO systems produce water slowly (typically 50-75 gallons per day). That's why storage tank is needed. Fine for drinking/cooking but not suitable for whole-house use.

Requires Water Pressure

RO needs minimum 40-60 PSI to function properly. Low pressure homes may need booster pump. We test pressure during assessment.

Not for Microbiologically Unsafe Water

While RO removes most bacteria, it's not certified as primary disinfection method. If your water has bacteria, install UV treatment BEFORE or AFTER the RO system.

Space Requirements

Standard systems need 14-18" height clearance under sink. Some under-sink areas are too crowded. We assess during consultation and can recommend compact systems if space is tight.

Investment & Operating Costs

Installation Cost

$400-1,200

Complete system installed including faucet

Annual Filters

$100-200

Pre/post filters changed annually

RO Membrane

$80-150

Every 2-3 years

Compare to Bottled Water:

Family drinking 5 gallons/week of bottled water at $1/gallon = $260/year

RO system installed = $600 first year, $150/year after for filters

RO system pays for itself in 2-3 years, then continues saving money while providing better water than most bottled brands!
